Second leg precariously poised after Calderon clash

Thursday, April 16, 2015

Real and Atletico played out the first part of the contest to  last season’s UEFA Champions League final and left everything to play for in the return leg to be played on Wednesday at the Bernabeu. For intensity and drama it was just like being back in Lisbon. The first leg was very intense with a nice tempo and a lot of clashing – Mario Mandzukic owning up the Diego Costa role. Despite the rifts the players remained focused on the task at hand and nothing got out of hand which is very commendable because the noise the Calderon was making was unbelievable.

Mario Suarez and Marcelo won't be able to play the next game, and that’s a problem for both sides. One thing Atletico Madrid tend to do in these games is to have two or three central midfielders, so Tiago should be the replacement. Atletico have Tiago to step in, but Real? Fabio Coentrao has been dealing with injuries of late and could be in trouble,he doesn't seem to care what happens with Real Madrid and there have been occasions where he hasn't been training. His commitment has been questioned in the Madrid media.Marcelo’s suspension will cringe Real more than Suarez’s will Atletico. Marcelo is a pro-modern full-back, a full-back that sometimes appears in the centre, goes forward most of the time, surprises with his appearances, creates havoc in attack and can shoot from outside the box and hat X factor for Real will disappear. The replacement, Fabio Coentrao, has really switched off in similar fashion to Sami Khedira.
Superb performance from Atl├ętico goalkeeper Jan Oblak holds Madrid at bay and he holds the key for Atletico Madrid's progression to next level.
I feel it’s in Real’s blood at the Santiago Bernabeu to attack and get the impression Atletico will score. Real will therefore need more than one goal to progress.Under 1.5 goals was a strong bet ahead of kick-off because when these two lock horns it's always tight, however i would place a Titanbet for the clash of the Titans. Real are in a dangerous position going to the Bernabeu with the scores level at 0-0 because, as they showed in the first half, even if the manager was thinking a draw would be a good result, the players were not made of that calibre - they played really well and were playing to win.
Simeone has an upper hand after the result. It’s the seventh game this season in which Carlo Ancelotti’s men haven’t been able to beat Atletico Madrid. Real Madrid still haven't scored at the Calderon in the last four attempts this season with modest 7-0 is the aggregate score of those four games. Ancelotti has admitted Atleticos defence is one of the meanest in the world and that they have failed to find the right strategy to break them down.
