Lyon 1-0 APOEL Highlights Champions League

APOEL will 'Fight' for CL Glory - Boaventura
Brazilian-born defender, William Boaventura, is confident that his club, APOEL Nicosia, can progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, despite sinking to a 1-0 defeat at Olympique Lyonnais, on Tuesday. “We're not going to give the victory to them without a fight”, Boaventura promised. With defeats of Porto and Zenit St. Petersburg under the waistband of their shorts, APOEL, this year's surprise package, appear more than capable of equalling a nervous-looking Lyon during the second leg of their round of sixteen clash, in early March. The match will be played at the GSP Stadium, Nicosia as fans of Betfair football will know. Boaventura is hoping that the prospect of playing the deciding fixture in front of their own fans will spur APOEL to victory. “It will be a different story in Nicosia”, the player said. “We always tend to struggle away, then we win at home […] I really believe we can turn this tie around at home.” Frenchman, Alexandre Lacazette, scored the only goal in last night's encounter, at the 58th minute mark. The clash was otherwise a sedate affair; APOEL had little going forward, reserving their first shot on goal until two minutes before time. The Nicosia back line did a decent job of frustrating Lyon's forwards. Those looking at the Betfair Champions League odds will know the tie is far from over. Boaventura's teammate, Ivan Trickovski, summed up APOEL's 'game plan' for last night's fixture in just a few words, by stating that his club had tried to keep Lyon as far away from the goalmouth as possible. In other words, Nicosia had been playing for a draw, and will be happy with only going a goal down in France. In the only other Champions League fixture to be played on Tuesday evening, Barcelona defeated Bayer 04 Leverkusen 3-1, courtesy of a goal from Lionel Messi and a brace from Alexis Sanchez. The German outfit now have a mountain to climb, if they hope to overturn a two-goal deficit at the Camp Nou.

Mourinho going nowhere

Jose Mourinho has played down reports he could be set to leave Real Madrid after alleged in-fighting between himself and a number of high-profile members of his squad. The former Chelsea boss has led Real into the knockout stages of the Champions League, as well as getting the club five-points clear at the top of the Primera Liga – now in with a great chance of reclaiming the title from its three-year stay at Barcelona. Despite leading bitter rivals Barca in the league, last month saw Real go down to their third defeat from four matches against Pep Guardiola's men – in a match where Mourinho once again came in for criticism for his seemingly physical tactics. Those looking at the Betfair la liga betting will be wondering if they can hold on to top spot. It was in the aftermath of this defeat that the alleged disagreement occurred between the manager and his squad, however, Mourinho has been quick to insist all is well in the Madrid camp, highlighting just how much progress the club have made since he took charge. "I am happy in Madrid and the squad do not have any problems with me," Mourinho said. "At the moment, we're leaders with a five-point lead on the team everyone says are the best in the world." "And we have won six games out of six in the Champions League. So I think we haven't got as many problems as people want to say." If Madrid can maintain their lead atop the Primera Liga and win the title, then it has to viewed upon as being a stunning piece of management from the self-proclaimed 'Special One'. Those following the Betfair sports betting tips need to bear this in mind. While it's hard to argue that Barcelona aren't the current best team in the world, Real's consistency in the league has now put them in control of the league and ready to spring something of a surprise. Whatever Mourinho's methods, it's blatantly they work.
