Match Highlites Liverpools defensive mistakes cost them dearly, and Benitez will have to pick up the pieces in time for this Saturday's vital clash with Bolton Wanderers.
"We now know that we have to go to Bolton on Saturday and win. Everything could change if we do that, our confidence will improve. This squad is virtually the same as last season so I believe it is good enough to mount a title challenge."
Anfield was left frustrated as Liverpool wasted the opportunities that came their way, but ultimately they were reduced to running up blind alleys, and out of ideas, in the face of Villa's resilience.
Liverpool (England): An own goal by Brazilian Lucas, Curtis Davies header and Ashley Youngs penalty helped Aston Villa to a surprise 3-1 win over Liverpool, who pulled one back through Fernando Torres, at Anfield, on Monday.
Midfielder Lucas glanced Youngs free kick into his own net 11 minutes before the interval and Davies made it two in added time.
Torres halved the deficit with 18 minutes left but after Steven Gerrard tripped Nigel Reo-Coker , Young made it three from the spot to make it two defeats from their opening three matches for the Reds.
It was also the first time since December 2007, when they were defeated 1-0 by Manchester United , that Liverpool were defeated in the Premier League at Anfield as Rafael Benitezs sides frustrations at home, where they drew seven matches last season, surfaced once again.
I personally feel, Liverpool lack that spark, or may be theres a bigger one in store...lets see some good football soon.
