Germany put in a convincing performance in their World Cup warm-up match against Hungary on Saturday night, winning 3-0 in Budapest.

Lukas Podolski put them ahead with a penalty in the fourth minute and only a string of saves from Gabor Kiraly prevented them from leading by a greater margin at the break.

Goals from Mario Gomez and Cacau in the second half gave the result a more realistic feel as a dominant Germany came away with a morale-boosting victory a week before they jet out to South Africa.

Podolski, who scored just twice for Cologne in the Bundesliga last season, showed how he transforms when he pulls on a Germany shirt as he tested Kiraly with a powerful drive in the third minute.

The Hungary goalkeeper was in for a busy night and he passed his first test by tipping the ball over, but he was let down by his team-mates from the resultant corner when Sandor Torghelle pulled down Per Mertesacker inside the penalty area.

Podolski stepped up to place his penalty into the top corner to give Joachim Low's side the lead.

A good combination between Mesut Ozil and Piotr Trochowski led to a shot from the former being saved by Kiraly, who denied the Werder Bremen winger again moments later.

Kiraly made further saves to deny Miroslav Klose and Ozil again as Hungary held on desperately until half-time.

Low made several changes to his side at the break and one of his substitutes Gomez scored with practically his first first touch of the match.

He was sent through by another substitute, Marko Marin, and managed to just poke the ball into the bottom corner as Kiraly raced from his line in the 69th minute.

Gomez was on target five times in a midweek 24-0 victory over a local amateur team in Germany's training camp in Sudtirol and showed he is desperate not to be one of the two names dropped by Low to form his final 23-man squad next Tuesday as he set up the third.

His pass sent Cacau through and the Stuttgart striker rounded Kiraly before placing the ball into the empty net to boost his chances of boarding the flight to South Africa.

And Low's task in trimming his squad will be made all the harder after Marcell Jansen, Marin, Trochowski and debutant Holger Badstuber all made good impressions.

USA vs Turkey 2:1 Highlights

International friendly match: USA vs Turkey 2:1. Highlights

The United States eventually gave Philadelphia the farewell party it demanded and, in the second half at least, something for Fabio Capello to ponder.

But America must know that if they play as they did in the opening half, the champagne corks popping in Rustenburg will bear an English stamp.

A crowd of more than 50,000 gathered at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field to wish the United States safe passage to the World Cup.

With the barbecues fired and the beer flowing in the vast car parks it was all going so well until the referee blew his whistle. Thereafter Turkey went through their short-passing, quick-footed repertoire to leave American coach Bob Bradley with serious remedial work to do at half time.

The opening goal followed a blueprint available to Capello. Whipps Cross-born Colin Kazim-Richardson sliced open a pedestrian defence to set Arda Turan away in acres of space down the left, the kind of room Aaron Lennon or Theo Walcott will relish if offered in Rustenburg. Turan survived a scissored challenge from two defenders to crack the ball past Tim Howard in goal.

The same defence shortcomings exposed on Tuesday night during the 4-2 defeat to the Czech Republic were evident here. AC Milan stopper Oguchi Onyewu failed to make the starting line-up again following the patellar tendon rupture suffered last October. Carlos Bocanegra, who had minor surgery to correct a hernia three weeks ago, filled in at left back with Jay DeMerit and Clarence Goodson forming a flat-footed pairing at centre-back.

West Ham’s Jonathan Spector was routinely outpaced at right back, offering Capello potentially rich rewards down the left. The one threat presented in the first half came from Jozy Altidore, whose cross after breaking into the box down the right, narrowly escaped the outstretched boot of Landon Donovan.

The introduction of Jose Torres and Robbie Findlay after the break produced significant forward thrust. Guus Hiddink’s team were hardly busting a gut to defend their lead and as the hour approached the Americans found a way to release Donovan, who disguised his pass beautifully to pick out the advancing Altidore.

Not oven Altidore, who failed to score in 25 successive games for Hull, could miss that cherry. What little interest Turkey retained evaporated allowing Clint Dempsey to add a second and clip a post with the cake there to be iced in the closing minutes.

The Americans face Australia next week in a final warm-up game with confidence partially restored. The 55,000 witnesses inside the stadium whooped and hollered when the stadium announcer told them they had made history as the largest crowd to watch the United States play soccer in Philadelphia.

The enthusiasm of the fans was not reflected in the editorial policy of the Philadelphia Inquirer, which ranked its coverage of the national football team no higher than lacrosse, and turned its front page trailer to a distant page five inside. For them the only story in this town was the fate of the Flyers, contesting the first leg of the Stanley Cup Final against the Blackhawks of Chicago.

The standing of hockey in north America is such that they do not premise the name with ‘ice’ and distinguish it from its sister sport by use of the term ‘field’. Against this backdrop soccer fights for space in newsprint and in the hearts of the nation.

The United States are establishing a decent pedigree, having contested every World Cup since 1990. In last year’s Confederations Cup in South Africa the US beat Spain 2-0 and led Brazil by the same score in the final before doing the decent thing and folding. They are in rank a good measure above competent and in Howard, Donovan and Dempsey have players good enough to earn a living in the Premier League.

They are bound into a tight unit by Bradley, who employs his son Michael at the centre of an industrious midfield. Bradley Snr’s principal concerns in the countdown to Rustenburg remain at the back. Despite that skipper Bocanegra is optimistic.

He said: “The past three and half years we’ve been together, we’ve been working towards this. I don’t think it’s about the next two weeks. It’s been building up from about three and half years ago when we first came together as a team. We’ve had a good nucleus of guys that have been around a long time with additions here and there. Hopefully we peak just at the right time in South Africa.”

Honduras came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw with Belarus in Villach.

Julio Leon put the Central American country ahead in the 25th minute, but a quickfire brace from Anton Putsilo (56, 60) turned the game on its head.

Georgie Welcome scored in the 71st minute, though, to earn Honduras a draw.

Honduras are in the same group as Spain, Switzerland and Chile in South Africa.

South Africa vs Colombia 2:1 Highlight

International friendly match: South Africa vs Colombia 2:1. Highlights

Bafana Bafana vs Colombia turned out to be an all-penalty affair as the home team pulled off a 2-1 win at a packed Soccer City on Thursday night.

Teko Modise and Katlego Mphela netted from the spot to keep South Africa’s World Cup preparations on track, cancelling out Giovanni Andrés Moreno’s converted penalty.

Well I don’t know if the South Americans are just difficult or if the Kenyan ref was a bit uncertain or inconsistent or if there was a communications problem, but this was a very messy game, with players – mostly Bafana Bafana flying through the air and three Colombians stretchered off the field and more yellow cards than I’ve seen for ages.

Khune Injured; Two Penalties and Many Yellow Cards

It was the injury to Bafana stopper, Itumeleng Khune that was the focal point of the opening minutes, when he collided with Jackson Arley Martínez. Khune’s injury was the start of a frantic 15 minutes, in which two penalties were awarded and a number of yellow cards were dished out.

South Africa continued to dominate the possession stakes, passing the ball around nicely at the back and in the midfield. Still, despite dictating terms in the middle of the park, they were not penetrative enough going forward as they struggled to find decent goal scoring chances.

Second Half – Steven Pienaar and Kagiso Dikgacoi

After the break, Bafana head coach Carlos Alberto Parreira rang the changes. Steven Pienaar entered the fray along with Josephs and Kagiso Dikgacoi. Thanduyise Khuboni, Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Khune all made way.

The changes seemed to stunt Bafana’s forward momentum and to make matters worse, Tsepo Masilela left the field injured, with Lucas Thwala taking his place on the left flank. Then to put the cherry on the cake, the Colombians who were very big and physical seemed to have poor Steven Pienaar off his feet more than on them at one stage.

Great play by Tshabalala; Mphela Scores

In the 57th minute, some great play between Mphela and Tshabalala saw the latter being tripped in the box just as he was about to pull the trigger.

The referee rightly pointed to the spot and Mphela stepped up to smack the ball to the right of the keeper who went the wrong way.

The second half fell into a bit of a lull as no team could really create any decent goal scoring chances. That was until the final five minutes when Colombia began to pile forward in their numbers to find an equaliser.

Benni Mc Carthy Gets a Run

The 63rd minute saw the introduction of Benni McCarthy but he could not really make his presence felt due to the heavy Colombian presence in midfield and the attacking backs that choked the majority of Bafana’s attacking moves.

Moeneeb Josephs – Great in the Goal

Second half substitute Moeneeb Josephs, stepped up to the plate, making two very important saves in the dying minutes of the match. First, in the 86th minute, he was able to turn away a Martinez shot from about 14 yards out diving low to his right to make the save.

The final period was a nerve-wracking mix of great Bafana defending and needless giving-away of free-kicks by the hosts. Especially, that tackle by Aaron Mokoena was reckless and really unnecessary.

Then in the last minute of the match Josephs was again at his best, diving full stretch to his left to tip a Hugo Rodallega shot over the crossbar.

I personally would prefer Josephs as a number one choice goalkeeper. He is much more active and alive and he is a great communicator.

Bafana Win at Soccer City

In the end Bafana were able to hold out and celebrated their first win in their first match at the newly revamped Soccer City.

There were some late scares for Bafana, but “Slimkat” Josephs and man-of-the-match Khumalo combined to ensure the World Cup hosts secured a win at Africa’s biggest stadium. And Head coach Carlos Alberto Parreira’s ninth victory in a row with Bafana Bafana.

Denmark vs Senegal 2:0 Highlights

International friendly match: Denmark vs Senegal 2:0. Highlights

Christian Poulsen and Tomas Enevoldsen scored to earn Denmark a 2-0 friendly win over Senegal in Aalborg.

Juventus midfielder Poulsen broke the deadlock in the 27th minute and FC Groningen's Enevoldsen added a second goal in the 90th minute as the Danes warmed up for their forthcoming World Cup campaign.

Danish player Simon Kjaer was carried off on a stretcher and seems certain to miss the World Cup.

"He has had an impact on the side of the ligament, a knee injury," team doctor Soren Kaalund was quoted as saying by local news agency Ritzau. "He seems stable and we are reasonably confident but if there is major damage then it's something that takes a long time.

"We will evaluate it and he will have a scan."

Denmark are in Group E in South Africa alongside Holland, Cameroon and Japan.

World Cup Celebrations

Personally, I love celebrating goals and I feel that most people don’t do it enough.

You don’t have to be in front of 50,000 people to celebrate a goal.

You should enjoy scoring goals wherever you are. Whether it’s in the local park, at practice, or in your City final.

Love Scoring goals! This way you will be much more likely to score goals.

Simple concept, I realze, but it works!

My friend put it best. After he ripped a shot into the top corner from 25 yards out he proceeded to run down the field doing an airplane screaming “I Love Scoring Goals!!!” – Andrew “DJ Mac” Machalski

Enjoy ;)

Maradona confident his team can go all the way

All eyes will be on Group B in South Africa thanks to the presence in the Argentina dugout of one Diego Armando Maradona.

The star of the 1986 World Cup and one of the greatest players ever, the colourful and controversial 49-year-old is sure to attract his fair share of headlines in his new guise as national coach.

Having endured a turbulent qualifying campaign, Maradona has overseen a marked improvement since his side snatched a berth at the finals in their last qualifying game against Uruguay.

The impressive nature of its 1-0 friendly win in Germany in March prompted critics to reassess their pre-conceptions about Argentina's chances of success, while in European Footballer of the Year Lionel Messi it boasts the world's best player.

Guile and experience

The squad is also thick with guile and experience, despite the surprising omissions of Inter Milan pair Javier Zanetti and Esteban Cambiasso.

Argentina will face Greece, Nigeria and South Korea in the group phase.

Captain Javier Mascherano believes there will be no need to worry if the two-time champion doesn't click immediately.

“In the long run what really matters is not what the pundits say but how well you do during that month,” said the Liverpool holding midfielder.

IN DEMAND: Argentina's mercurial star Lionel Messi, hemmed in by mediapersons at Buenos Aires on Tuesday, is the trump card in the two-time champion team marshalled by the great Diego Maradona.

“Spain and Brazil look a cut above the rest because they've both won trophies in the last couple of years, but experience tells me that the World Cup is won by the team that improves through the tournament, not necessarily the one who plays the best.

Maradona, meanwhile, is confident that his team can go all the way.

“I tell my players that 30 days of sacrifice for the chance to kiss the World Cup is nothing in the life of a man,” he said.

“An achievement like that is like touching the sky. I played in four World Cups and reached two finals. I know what it takes.

Overcoming slow start

South Korea, semifinalist on home soil in 2002, overcame a sluggish start under new coach Huh Jung-Moo but eventually qualified with two games to spare to reach its eighth finals — an Asian record.

“We were drawn in the so-called Group of Death in Asian qualifying and we made it through,” said Huh. “We believe we can do the job again in South Africa”.

Nigeria is not the force that captivated the world at the 1998 tournament, when players like Jay-Jay Okocha and Sunday Oliseh shone but in Joseph Yobo, John Mikel Obi and Obafemi Martins it possess a steely spine.

Sevilla beat Atl Madrid to lift King's Cup

Barcelona: Sevilla claimed their second King's Cup triumph in four years when Diego Capel's early strike and a late breakaway goal from Jesus Navas fired them to a 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.
In a bad-tempered match at a rowdy Nou Camp stadium in Barcelona, winger Capel pounced on a loose ball on the edge of the penalty area in the fifth minute and smashed a left-foot shot past David De Gea.
Atletico forwards Diego Forlan and Sergio Aguero went close to equalising before Navas skipped past several lunging tackles, took the ball round De Gea and finished into the empty net in the 91st minute.

It was a fifth domestic cup success for the Andalucian club, winners in 2007, and ended their season on a high after they finished fourth in La Liga and qualified for the Champions League.

Atletico, who have won the cup nine times, were denied a second trophy of the campaign after last week's 2-1 victory over Fulham in the Europa League final.

Sevilla coach Antonio Alvarez dedicated the cup win to the fans and defender Antonio Puerta, who died in 2007 after collapsing during a La Liga match.

"Antonio Puerta was with us tonight," Alvarez said in a television interview.

"You couldn't tell that our fans were in the minority and they helped us as if it were our own stadium," he added.

"All these people who have travelled more than 1,000 kilometres to get here on a work day. It's incredible."

PARTY MOOD

On a balmy evening in the Catalan capital, the match kicked off after enthusiastic singing along to the wordless Spanish national anthem, in contrast to last year's final between Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao when it was roundly booed.

In the festive atmosphere, many Sevilla fans were sporting sombreros in homage to club president Jose Maria del Nido and vast swathes of the giant arena were decorated in the red and white of Atletico.

The party mood in the crowd failed to rub off on the teams and the match boiled over with around 20 minutes left when a crunching tackle by Luis Perea on Capel prompted pushing and shoving between players and staff next to the technical areas.

Atletico coach Quique Sanchez Flores and Alvarez had a heated exchange before match officials restored calm.

Atletico pressed forward desperately as the clock ticked down, leaving holes at the back that Navas was able to exploit to kill the game off.

The last time Barca's Nou Camp stadium hosted a cup final was in 1970, during the Francisco Franco dictatorship when the competition was called the "Copa del Generalisimo".

Real Madrid beat Valencia 3-1 to win the trophy and Franco was in the stadium to present the cup to Real captain Gento.

This time it was the Prince of Asturias who handed over the trophy to an ecstatic Sevilla captain Andres Palop.

"It was an emotional match and we could have equalised right up until the last minute," Sanchez Flores said in a television interview. "But Sevilla won the game and they have to be congratulated."

Samaras rules out Palermo move

Thursday, May 13, 2010

May 13th, 2010

Celtic striker Georgios Samaras insists he has no plans to leave the Scottish side to join Italian side Palermo.

The 25-year-old has long been linked with a move away from Parkhead, but the Greece international is keen to stay with the Hoops to fight for his place in the starting XI.

Samaras told the Scottish Sun: “I am not open for talks with other clubs because I am very happy in Glasgow.

“I have heard some talk, but nothing else.

“No one has spoken to me or my agent.

“To be honest with you, I am not looking to leave Celtic. I have a year to go and I am not looking to leave for Palermo or anyone else for that matter.

“I also believe we can achieve great things next season.

“My focus for now is the World Cup and after that I will return ready for pre-season with Celtic.”

Just like the Premiership, La Liga, poses a tantalizing end to the the season, just 1 point separating the the two biggies, it wouldn't be easy for Barca as they play away to Sevilla, while Real Madrid don't have a easy game either, they face Athletic Bilbao.
Messi and Ronaldo bringing great joy to the La Liga fans, with their fancied footwork and intelligent movement.
