Ronaldo snubs Messi by naming 'Kaka, Rooney and Drogba'
Friday, February 26, 2010
Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has snubbed the current European Player of the year, Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, by not naming him in his top three players in the world. The Portuguese international instead choose his Bernabeu teammate Kaka, his ex Manchester Unite teammate Wayne Rooney, and his former Premier League rival Chelsea FC’s Didier Drogba as the top three players in the world.
The Manchester United legend named his former Old Trafford colleague, Wayne Rooney, ahead of the diminutive Barcelona forward, while also praising Chelsea FC talisman Didier Drogba. Rooney recently scored his 27th goal of a prolific campaign, while Didier Drogba scored both goals against Wolves recently to take his tally to 19 league goals. Ronaldo also named the former World and European player of the year Kaka, his current Real Madrid teammate ahead of Messi.
Ronaldo left Manchester United in the summer, when Sir Alex Ferguson reluctantly accepted an £80 million bid from Real Madrid. Since departing Old Trafford, the 24-year-old has regularly praised his former club, teammates and manager, so Rooney’s inclusion is not altogether surprising. Indeed Drogba’s form for Chelsea FC this season has also seen him emerge as Rooney’s main contender for the PFA player of the year award.
When asked who he thought were the top players in world football currently, the Manchester United legend told Corriere dello Sport: “"Kaka, Rooney and Drogba are the best players in the world."

Man City ace Adebayor: Meeting Messi left me star-struck
Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor has revealed how meeting with Lionel Messi left him speechless.
Adebayor says he struggled for words when first meeting the Barcelona star during a recent trip to visit former Arsenal teammate Thierry Henry.
Asked by BBC Sport if he has ever been star-struck, Adebayor replied: "Messi.
"I went out to see Thierry Henry in Barcelona," he continued. "He told me someone else was coming to dinner and all of sudden Messi walked in. He looked so small, so insignificant, and yet to me he was the world's greatest player. For a moment, I wasn't even able to speak."

Blackburn are close to agreeing a new deal with midfielder Morten Gamst Pedersen.
The Norwegian, who has enjoyed a new lease of life in central midfield this season, is out of contract in the summer.
The 28-year-old, signed from Tromso six years ago, is in advanced talks with the Ewood Park club.
Manager Sam Allardyce said: "Morten has a deal on the table and his representatives will be over, no doubt, to finalise that deal with the chairman in the next few days or weeks.
"We certainly hope he does agree terms and signs on for the next few years."
Rovers have secured the services of promising Canadian youngster Junior Hoilett on a two-and-a-half year contract. The 19-year-old, who was first taken on trial by the club at the age of 12, has made a big impression after breaking into the first team this season.
Allardyce added: "It is one of the hardest and longest negotiations I have experienced but finally we have persuaded Junior that Blackburn is the place for him.
"We're really looking forward to his future at Blackburn and hopefully seeing him develop into a fine player."
Meanwhile, Rovers have received a positive update on the fitness of captain Ryan Nelsen.
It was feared the New Zealand international defender could miss the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury in last week's Barclays Premier League defeat of Bolton.
But Allardyce said: "I think he was worried about the injury when it happened, we all were, but now we have had the scan and it has settled down, it only looks a few weeks rather months."

Nike's 2010 national team jerseys made from recycled plastic bottles
Photo: Business Wire
All of Nike's national teams, including Brazil, Portugal and the Netherlands, will take to the pitch in South Africa this summer wearing jerseys made from up to eight recycled plastic bottles.
Nike unveiled the shirts that will be worn by the players and fans of the eight national teams it sponsors at a global media event at Battersea Power Station in London on Thursday night.
To make the 2010 national team kits, Nike's fabric suppliers sourced discarded plastic bottles from Japanese and Taiwanese landfill sites and then melted them down to produce new yarn that was ultimately converted to fabric for the jerseys.
This process saves raw materials and reduces energy consumption by up to 30 percent compared to manufacturing virgin polyester.
By using recycled polyester for its new range of national jerseys, Nike prevented nearly 13 million plastic bottles, totaling nearly 254,000 kg of polyester waste, from going into landfill sites.
Considering the environment doesn't mean sacrificing the innovative performance elements of Nike's kits.
For this summer's finals, the kits have been designed to keep players drier, cooler and more comfortable, allowing them to maintain an optimum body temperature and perform at their best on the pitch.
The teams wearing Nike's new hi-tech kits in South Africa ,Brazil, The Netherlands, Portugal, USA, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Serbia, and Slovenia.
Away national team kits will be available starting February 25th while national team home kits will be available May 1st.

They are available at local Nike store locations and on nike.com and nikefootball.com.

Javier Mascherano should be facing a five-match ban - and he still may be if the FA disciplinary department work in a consistent manner after his over-the-top challenge on Manchester City's Gareth Barry in the drab 0-0 draw against Liverpool at Eastlands on Sunday afternoon.
TV analysts thought that the Argentine should have been dismissed, but only as a result of a second yellow card.

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce hit by fine for ref remarks
Monday, February 22, 2010
Sunderland manager Steve Bruce has been fined £2,500 by the Football Association for his strongly worded criticism of referee Andre Marriner.
The 49-year-old described defender Michael Turner's sending-off against Manchester City last December as "obscene", "a joke" and "an outrage."
Bruce admitted the misconduct charge, but his "exemplary record" helped him avoid more serious punishment.
The FA has also warned Bruce about his future conduct.
Bruce's outburst related to an incident in his side's 4-3 defeat against City on 19 December last year, when Turner was dismissed in the closing minutes for apparently catching City midfielder Gareth Barry with his elbow.
Sunderland appealed against the decision to dismiss Turner, but the FA dismissed the club's case and the defender was banned for another match on top of his automatic three-match ban.

Portsmouth owner Balram Chainrai has promised the club "will not close" as it emerged a South African consortium is interested in buying Pompey.
The unnamed group is one of "four or five interested parties" considering taking over the cash-strapped club.
"Balram met the South Africans on Friday and they have promised to provide proof of funds on Monday," Chainrai's spokesman told BBC Sport.
"Balram will do whatever it takes to save the club. It will not close."
The Premier League club recently survived a winding-up order, but is due to return to court on 1 March over the winding-up petition.
Chainrai recently became the club's fourth owner of the season, taking 90% of the club shares after the previous owner Ali Al Faraj defaulted on loan payments due to him.
"The club have had false dawns before and we have to be certain these funds are genuine," added the spokesman. "If they aren't forthcoming we'll have to look to other solutions."

Manchester City will allow striker Carlos Tevez as much time off as he needs after his baby daughter was born prematurely
Tevez, 26, has missed City's last three games after being granted compassionate leave to fly to Argentina where his daughter, Katie, is in intensive care.
Club officials have spoken to Tevez but do not know when he plans to return.
Roberto Mancini's men face Stoke in the FA Cup on Wednesday and play Premier League leaders Chelsea on Saturday.
City manager Mancini hopes to have Tevez available for those matches but has not spoken to the Argentine, who has scored 19 goals since joining City from local rivals Manchester United last summer, since Wednesday.
The club do not know the player's exact whereabouts because they are treating the matter as private and personal, so do not wish to bombard to him with telephone calls.
"I don't know where Tevez is," said Mancini after Sunday's 0-0 draw with Liverpool dropped them to sixth place in the table. "I think he is in Argentina.
"It's a big problem for us because we have an important week and we don't have Tevez. For me it is no good. Carlos has been eight days at home and I don't know if, while in Argentina, he has been working [on his fitness].
"I hope Carlos, within the next two days, can come back here because we need him. Maybe he is on the plane. He had some problems with his family but now it has been resolved and I hope he comes back. I need him."
Tevez's adviser Kia Joorabchian said the player was aiming to return in time for City's trip to Stamford Bridge.
He also insisted the former West Ham forward's fitness was good and that Tevez had been in regular contact with the club.
"He hopes to be back for the Chelsea game," stated Joorabchian. "He hopes things will get better, for his daughter's sake and because he wants to get back and play. He loves to play.
"The signs are very positive in terms of his daughter's recovery and we are all hoping this is the case. He was determined to get back for the Liverpool game but unfortunately the situation didn't get much better. However, she has got better over the weekend.
"He has been keeping the club informed on a daily basis - including the manager. They have exchanged messages once or twice.
"He's training daily with the national team of Argentina and spending one-and-a-half to two hours there. He is a professional. He understands that side of it."
As well as missing Tevez, Mancini is also without suspended midfielder Patrick Vieira and injured winger Martin Petrov, while striker Roque Santa Cruz has a knee injury.
City have won only two of their last seven matches in all competitions and Sunday's draw meant both they and Liverpool lost ground in the race for fourth spot, with Tottenham and Aston Villa both winning.
"Against Liverpool it is not easy to win the game, we tried but Liverpool are a good team," added Mancini.
"At the end of the game the draw was the right result as we didn't concede any chances to Liverpool and they did not concede any chances to us."
