N´Zogbia arrested over suspected driving test scam
Thursday, April 22, 2010
April 22nd, 2010
Wigan’s French winger Charles N’Zogbia has been arrested on suspicion of getting someone else to sit part of his driving test, police said on Thursday.
The 23-year-old, who lives near Manchester, was taken into police custody on Wednesday at a driving test center on suspicion of fraud by false representation after turning up to do the practical part of his examination.
It is understood officials called police after suspecting he had got someone else to take the theory section of his test.
A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said: “At about 8.30am on Wednesday April 21, 2010, police working alongside the Driving Standards Agency arrested a 23-year-old man at Sale driving test center on suspicion of fraud by false representation.
“The man has been bailed until June 3 2010 pending further inquiries.”
N’Zogbia, who joined Wigan from Newcastle last year, scored the winning goal for his side in the upset 3-2 win over Arsenal on Sunday.
Latics manager Roberto Martinez admitted N’Zogbia had made a naive mistake as a result of being badly advised.
“The way I see the whole situation is that Charles has been badly advised, and he’s made a naive mistake,” Martinez said.
“We’re going to look into every single detail before I give my full side of the story, but what is important is Charles has reacted in a very mature way.
“We need to remember he is a very young man, but he knows he is also a public figure, and he needs to make sure he becomes a stronger and more experienced human being.
“In that respect we’ll help him to ensure he is available to do what he does best which is playing football.
“We’ll collaborate with the police and with Charles to make sure we get out of this situation in a positive way.”

Toure warns Adebayor to keep cool in Arsenal reunion
Toure warns Adebayor to keep cool in Arsenal reunion
April 22nd, 2010
Manchester City captain Kolo Toure has warned Emmanuel Adebayor to keep his calm when the Togo striker makes a potentially explosive return to Arsenal on Saturday.
Adebayor provoked a furious reaction from Arsenal fans when he celebrated a goal against his former club at Eastlands in September by sprinting the length of the pitch before sliding to his knees in front of them.
The 26-year-old, who retired from international football earlier this month, was warned by the Football Association over his future conduct and also earned a retrospective three-match ban for an incident in the same match involving Robin van Persie, which left the Arsenal forward with a facial wound.
And with City travelling to Arsenal on Saturday for a crucial match as Roberto Mancini’s side chase fourth place in the Premier League, Ivory Coast defender Toure knows Adebayor must keep his emotions in check.
“The game against them last September was really difficult for him but he needs to show more intelligence because we all know that what he did was not the best reaction – and as a friend I’ve told him that,” Toure said.
“I’ve told him he must be calm and not do anything (provocative).
“Ade is a professional player and must just focus on the game and give everything to help the team win.”

City in summer hunt for Torres
April 22nd, 2010
(GSM) – Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini admits his interest in Liverpool striker Fernando Torres. However, the Italian tactician will put transfer talk to side until the end the of the season.
While City have been heavily linked with a move for the Spain international and Mancini acknowledges his admiration for “fantastic” Torres, the City manager wants to focus solely on his team’s top-four bid.
Mancini said, “Fernando Torres is a fantastic striker.
“But all the teams in Europe are interested in him.
“We must get the rest of the matches out of the way first, then we will decide about other players.”
Mancini wants his team to challenge for the Premier League next season but knows that he needs to secure the signings of top players. And Mancini reckons world-class players would only be interested to join a Champions League side.
He added, “All the top players want to play in the Champions League.
“Next year we want to be a team who wins the Premier League. To do that we need top players.”

Liverpool attempt salvage mission at Europa League
Liverpool attempt salvage mission at Europa League
April 22nd, 2010
After a failed title challenge and an uphill battle to finish in the top four Liverpool look to salvage something from this season by lifting the inaugural Europa League and travel to the Vicente Calderon to face Atletico Madrid on Thursday for the semi-final first leg.
Liverpool beat West Ham 3-0 on Monday to prepare for the game and show they can score goals without star striker Fernando Torres who has been denied a homecoming to Atletico after being ruled out for the rest of the season due to knee surgery.
It is a major setback for Liverpool to lose their top-scorer and bitterly disappointing for Torres who is once again denied an emotional return to Atletico who he joined at the age of 10 before being made club captain at the tender age of 19.
“I believe we can cause them problems, even without Fernando (Torres),” insisted Israeli midfielder Yossi Benayoun.
“He’s the best striker in the world and with him things are much easier, however he’s injured and we need to try and win the game for him.”
In the absence of Torres coach Rafael Benitez is set to turn to 21-year-old Frenchman David Ngog who started and scored in the West Ham win while midfielder Maxi Rodriguez joins Torres in missing out against his old club as he is cup-tied.
Both Liverpool and Atletico parachuted into the competition after falling at the Champions League group stage and it now represents a big chance for the two to win some silverware and appease their suffering fans after poor league campaigns.
Liverpool, Premier League runners-up last season, are a disappointing sixth, five points off the top four, while Atletico languish down in 10th in La Liga 15 points off the Champions League places although they have managed to reach the Kings Cup final so a cup double could rescue their season.
Atletico must do without key Argentine striker Sergio “Kun” Aguero through suspension and winger Jose Antonio Reyes believes his absence is more significant than Liverpool losing Torres.
“Both teams lose a lot (with Torres and Aguero) but I think that the absence of Kun (Aguero) is more important because he is key to Atletico,” said Reyes. “We will notice his absence, though not too much I hope.”
Atletico have been infuriatingly inconsistent this season and lost 2-1 to bottom side Xerez in their last home match to prompt a chorus of jeers at the Calderon.
However, Atletico have saved their best performances for Europe and have matched Liverpool in their last two meetings drawing 1-1 in both the group games in last season’s Champions League.
With a direct flight unavailable due to the volcanic eruptions, Liverpool have had to plan a marathon journey to the Spanish capital including three separate trains before a proposed flight from Bordeaux to Madrid.
Atletico will hope the journey takes its toll on their opponents as they look to secure a first leg lead ahead of the tough return leg at Anfield on April 29.
The winner of the Liverpool-Atletico semi-final will start as favourites to lift the trophy against either Fulham or Hamburg although the latter will have home advantage at the May 12 final.

Simao wants home advantage
Simao wants home advantage
April 22nd, 2010
(GSM) – Simao has emphasized the importance of Atletico Madrid taking a good result from their home leg with Liverpool tonight. The first leg will be played at the Vicente Calderon in the Europa League semi-final.
Simao insists that Atletico need to take advantage of playing at home in the first meeting. The Portuguese winger acknowledges the importance of rewarding the fans with a trophy and believes that possession can be the key to victory.
“These games against Liverpool will not be easy and I expect two tough matches between two evenly matched sides
“I think the tie will be settled on the smallest details.
“For us the main objective is to score at home and to give ourselves a chance in England.
“The tie will ultimately be settled at Anfield, but we need to make sure we arrive there with an opportunity to progress.”
“The key to this match will be to force the play and to dominate possession, only then will we get the chance to test (Jose) Reina.
“Atletico and Liverpool are two teams that need no introduction and the surprise factor is discarded at the semi-final stage.
“I don’t think Liverpool’s problems in the league will make any difference either, because we have suffered the same thing.
“We have not been able to transfer our form in the cups into the Primera Liga and that is disappointing for our supporters.
“Our fans dream of titles and it is vital we give our all over the course of these 180 minutes to make sure we reach the final.”

Soccer Shielding, Shielding in Soccer
Soccer Shielding, Shielding in Soccer
Soccer shielding is an important dribbling technique often used to keep possession in tight spaces. Shielding occurs when the player in possession of the ball positions themselves between the ball and their opponent creating a barrier with their body. The player simply uses their body as a shield to keep distance between the ball and the defender.
Effective Soccer Shielding Skills
To perfect shielding in soccer the player in possession of the ball should turn their body somewhat sideways to the defender with their knees slightly bent. Both of the player’s arms should be up and away from their body bent at the elbows. The arm closest to the defender will be used to hold off the defender (shield the defender) while the other arm is used for balance. The hands should also be used to feel the defender and can somewhat be used to manipulate the defender’s position. The shielding player’s head should be up at a position where they can see the defender and the ball; however, if they can feel the ball with their touch rather than looking at it they will be more effective. With a wide stance the ball should be held with the outside foot at the farthest distance from the defender, but close enough to maneuver quickly. The player shielding the ball should be able to move the ball with the soul of the foot, top of the foot, as well as the inside and outsides of both feet. Lastly, the shielding player should be able to quickly pivot and push or pull the ball into space farthest from the defender.
Coaching Points When Shielding
Here are a couple common mistakes that occur when players are learning to shield:
1. Shielding players get caught flat footed and do not keep their body in between the ball and the defender.
2. Whether it’s caused by not maneuvering the ball quick enough, or not moving their body quick enough they expose the ball to the opponent.
3. Expose the ball to the opponent by holding the ball too close to their body.
4. Players stand too straight up and do not get a low center of gravity.
5. The shielding player’s stance is not wide enough.
6. Shielding player is facing the defender exposing the ball.
7. Shielding player has their back to the defender
