Chelsea falls flat in 0-0 draw at Birmingham in Premier League

Chelsea missed the chance to extend its lead to seven points in the Premier League on Saturday when it was held to a scoreless draw at Birmingham. Chelsea failed to capitalize on a handful of second-half chances, and has won only one of its past five league matches — that with a late penalty against last-place Portsmouth. "It is not a good result for us," Chelsea coach Carlo Ancelotti said. "We are disappointed with the result but not for the performance of the team. We played well." The Blues lead defending champion Manchester United by five points. Manchester City beat Stoke 2-0 to close on fifth-place Tottenham, which drew 0-0 at Fulham. West Ham beat Portsmouth 2-0 to climb out of the relegation zone. United plays Hull on Sunday, while third-place Arsenal hosts fourth-place Aston Villa. Birmingham had the chance to take a halftime lead against Chelsea, but striker Christian Benitez was called for a contentious offside and then had a goal ruled out by the same linesman. Chelsea's best scoring chance came at the end of the first half when central defender Alex smashed a 35-yard free kick against the post. Nicolas Anelka was out with an injury, and Chelsea's attacking options for Monday's game against Fulham were further reduced when Florent Malouda was sent off for a second yellow card late in the game. Damien Duff almost won it for Fulham when he shot wide with two minutes left. "In terms of clear-cut goal chances I'd say we deserved to win that," Fulham manager Roy Hodgson said. "Their goalkeeper made two or three very good saves." West Ham won for the first time in five games through a first-half penalty by Alessandro Diamante and a late goal by Radoslav Kovac. Hull and Bolton, which drew 1-1 at Burnley, join Portsmouth in the relegation zone. "It was a fantastic win, a massive one," West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola said. "I rated this as a six-point game. It was so important for the table and for morale." Marouane Fellaini scored five minutes from the end to give Everton a 1-1 draw at Sunderland, which had led since the 17th minute on Darren Bent's goal. Wigan drew 1-1 with Blackburn, while Liverpool beat 10-man Wolverhampton 2-0. Celtic drops Hamilton in Scottish Premier League Celtic scored a goal in each half Saturday to beat Hamilton 2-0 in Glasgow and keep the pressure on Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premier League. The victory preserved an unbeaten home record against Hamilton stretching back to 1939. Celtic has 36 points, one fewer than the defending champions. Rooney reveals reasons

Striker says club do not meet his ambitions Wayne Rooney has revealed his reasons behind him wanting to leave Manchester United insisting it is not down to money but ambition. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed on Tuesday that Rooney wanted to leave the club, and admitted his disappointment and disbelief. Ferguson insisted he did not know the reasons behind Rooney's decision to shun a new contract at Old Trafford and instead look for a move away. But now Rooney - who has just 18-months left on his current deal, has released a statement outlining his decision to seek a move away from United. Rooney has been quick to deny that any moves away from the club would be financially motivated, insisting that the club's lack of investment in their squad is the primary factor. "I met with David Gill [United chief executive] last week and he did not give me any of the assurances I was seeking about the future squad," Rooney confirms. "I then told him that I would not be signing a new contract." Rooney also admitted he was shocked by Ferguson's comments on Tuesday, adding: "I was interested to hear what Sir Alex had to say yesterday and surprised by some of it. "It is absolutely true, as he said, that my agent and I have had a number of meetings with the club about a new contract. During those meetings in August I asked for assurances about the continued ability of the club to attract the top players in the world. "I have never had anything but complete respect for MUFC. How could I not have done given its fantastic history and especially the last six years in which I have been lucky to play a part? "For me its all about winning trophies - as the club has always done under Sir Alex. Because of that I think the questions I was asking were justified." Huge debt The England star insisted that he would always 'owe' something to Ferguson. "Despite recent difficulties, I know I will always owe Sir Alex Ferguson a huge debt. He is a great manager and mentor who has helped and supported me from the day he signed me from Everton when I was only 18," he said. "For Manchester United's sake I wish he could go on forever because he's a one off and a genius."

CRUYFF: I'D NEVER HIRE MOURINHO

Barcelona legend Johan Cruyff has continued his criticism of Jose Mourinho after claiming he would never hire the Portuguese to coach his club. Cruyff, who both played for and coached Barca, has been an outspoken critic of the now Real Madrid coach and the style of football he has played at FC Porto, Chelsea, Internazionale and now the Santiago Bernabeu. It is effective but far removed from the flamboyant style preferred by Dutchman Cruyff for both club and country. "I have great respect for Mourinho as a coach but, even with everything he has achieved, he would never be the coach of my team," he said. "I believe that a technician needs more things than to make the team play well. "They have to represent the club, the institution and the members. In that sense, (Frank) Rijkaard and (Pep) Guardiola are good representatives for a world-renowned institution."

SEVILLA SEND NAVAS TO SPECIALIST

Sevilla winger Jesus Navas will be sent to a specialist in a bid to get to the bottom of the ankle injury which has kept him on the sidelines for a month. The Spain international has not featured since limping out of a Europa League encounter against Paris Saint Germain on September 16. Following a lack of medical progress, Navas will now be seen by the same specialist that works with Spain's world number one tennis player Rafael Nadal. New coach Gregorio Manzano is keeping his fingers crossed that orthopaedic surgeon Mikel Sanchez does not suggest the need for surgery which could keep the winger out for several months. Meanwhile, Sevilla's sporting director, Ramon Rodriguez Verdejo 'Monchi', is demanding a European improvement when they take on Karpaty Lviv on Thursday. "The ideal thing would be to pick up six points in the two games against Karpaty in order to go into the last two matches with some security," he said.
