ONE

Dear Reader,

I'll cut right to the chase: This has been a huge year in the fight against extreme poverty. There's no other way to put it.

Watch our video

Here are some big, big things that we accomplished together:

  • We helped persuade world leaders to commit $4.3 billion to vaccinate some of the world's most vulnerable children against deadly diseases - saving an estimated 4 million lives in the next 5 years.
  • G20 leaders heard your voice and more than 400,000 other ONE members who backed our Hungry No More campaign, and committed to a number of agricultural solutions to break the cycle of famine in the Horn of Africa.
  • Last month governments took a giant step forward towards making sure aid money is more transparent and has the greatest possible impact on reducing poverty.
  • We celebrated the amazing progress being made in Africa towards achievement of the Millennium Development Goals with the ONE Africa Award. The winner of this year's award, a wonderful organization from Togo, have had an incredible impact in empowering women that is truly inspirational.

Phew! That's a lot. On behalf of ONE thank you. Very, very much. Without your help, and the help of millions of ONE members around the world, none of this would have been possible.

But our work doesn't stop here. Next year will be another critical year for ONE and we will need to be stronger than ever.

So please check out our great new video celebrating our successes in the fight against extreme poverty:

http://act.one.org/go/268?akid=2798.1915118.ddFScr&t=3

And let me ask one more thing. Over the holiday period, tell your family and friends about ONE and ask them to join you. The bigger our movement becomes, the greater the change we can make for the better.

Happy holidays from all of us at ONE, and a happy New Year. See you in 2012!

Pardew hoping to take advantage

Friday, November 25, 2011

Alan Pardew is hoping his Newcastle United players can take advantage of a potential Champions League hangover affecting Manchester United. The Magpies head to Old Trafford on Saturday attempting to avoid a second successive defeat in Manchester after their unbeaten start to the new campaign was ended by local rivals and leaders City last weekend. The north-east club were not disgraced when crashing 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium and Pardew is relishing the chance to lock horns with the champions, even if the football betting odds show it will be a hard match. "I wouldn't say it was one to enjoy," Pardew told the Shields Gazette. "For us, it's about getting back on the unbeaten run and looking for the result we need to do that." He added: "We have to make them work hard for anything they get. It's a difficult-looking game, but so was Man City, and we created chances there. "With more fortune this time, we'll see what we can produce." Sir Alex Ferguson's side suffered a third Champions League draw this season when they were held by Benfica on Tuesday and Pardew is hoping his players can take full advantage. The Premier League odds 2011 show Newcastle are no pushovers and they will be hoping to secure at least a point. He added: "They had a difficult night against Benfica, and we need to maximise everything we can at Old Trafford." To collect maximum points Newcastle will have to improve on a wretched record of having not won at Old Trafford in the league since February 1972. Prior to the Benfica draw, United had gone three games in the Premier League without conceding – winning all three games 1-0.

FUND THE FUTURE - Education rights now

Friday, November 04, 2011

We have a big opportunity to achieve Education For All on 8 November this year. The Global Partnership for Education is hosting a conference and is asking countries to commit to funding education for the 67 million children out of school.

Please support this campaign and email world leaders now

These children should be our next generation of leaders, doctors, scientists and teachers - but without access to free, quality education, they won't be. Instead, they face a lifelong struggle against disease, violence and poverty. This is why world leaders need to make the commitment now: and we are only asking for US$2.5 billion.

This is the amount the world spends on cigarettes in ONE DAY.

It is 1% of the amount of money the world spent on buying TELEVISIONS in 2010.

But it's an amount that could change the future for millions of children.

We are asking world leaders to:
  • Make a commitment to pay a fair share to basic education – and deliver on their promises
  • Untie aid and ensure it is spent in developing countries, not on scholarships or purchases of goods and services from your country
  • Deliver predictable aid to basic education and focus on teachers.
Please give your support to this campaign by emailing world leaders now

Thank you again for your support for our campaign.
