8 mins: Barça’s nervous start is summed up when Pique, conscious of the lurking Hernández, rashly passes back to Valdes. The goalkeeper, rushing out of his area, is hurried into a desperate clearance.
15 mins: Barça are finally settling into their trademark passing rhythms. After Xavi breaks free down the right flank, his fizzed cross is diverted just wide by the onrushing Pedro.
27 mins: The deadlock is broken by Barça, and with a goal of typical incisive class. Xavi exploits space in front of United’s back four and threads a pass to Pedro, who shoots in at the near post.
34 mins: Manchester United hit back in emphatic fashion. A sweet passing move of which Barça would be proud culminates in a snappy one-two between Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney , who sweeps high into the net.
42 mins: Rooney’s equaliser is not enough to appease Sir Alex Ferguson, who gives the striker the hairdryer treatment on the sidelines for dropping too deep in search of possession
54 mins: Barça start the second half in ominous fashion. First, Alves sees a shot saved by Van der Sar and then, moments later, Messi slams a low shot past the leaden-footed United goalkeeper from 20 yards.
65 mins: United are finding it impossible to gain a foothold. Alves cuts back to Lionel Messi, whose back-heel is blocked on the line; then Xavi’s rasping drive is well parried by Van der Sar.
69 mins: Game over. Nani’s error, moments after coming on as a substitute, leads to another superb Barça move. Messi’s run causes havoc, Pedro lays off to Villa and the striker curls into the top corner.
79 mins: With United chasing the game, Giggs flicks the ball into Villa’s hand inside the area. Cue feeble appeals for a penalty but, in keeping with the tone of the night, United are left frustrated.
