David Beckham has missed out on selection for the Great Britain Olympic football team.
The 37-year old midfielder was being heavily tipped to be among manager Stuart Pearce’s 18-man squad for the 2012 men’s Olympic football tournament but has not been picked as one of three players over the age of 23.
Those spots have gone to Beckham’s former Manchester United teammate Ryan Giggs, Liverpool striker Craig Bellamy and Manchester City defender Micah Richards and the ex-England captain admits he is disappointed to miss out.
“Everyone knows how much playing for my country has always meant to me. So I would have been honoured to have been part of this unique Team GB squad,” he said in a statement.
“Naturally I am very disappointed, but there will be no bigger supporter of the team than me. And like everyone, I will be hoping they can win the gold.
“As a Londoner I was really proud to have played a small part in bringing the Olympics to my home town as part of Seb’s [Coe] team and I can’t wait for the Games to begin and will enjoy every moment along with the rest of Great Britain.”
