Men's Olympic football Tournament

Wednesday, July 04, 2012

The football tournament taking place as part of this year’s Olympics in London has inevitably been overshadowed to a considerable extent by both the European Championships and the Champions League final. These events get considerable attention from young soccer fans and a perfect time to get the latest football kit.

There is little doubt who the favourites to win the Olympic football tournament, with Brazil having been installed as clear favourites to win the men’s tournament. They have been rated as favourites ever since the draw for the tournament was announced, thanks to a decidedly favourable Group C draw alongside New Zealand, Belarus and Egypt. It is certainly not anticipated that the Brazilians will have any trouble disposing of this opposition, to reach the next stage.

Second favourites to win the tournament are Spain, who will come up against Honduras, Japan and Morocco in their group. Again the chances of their failing to qualify from this group stand somewhere between slim and nil and – with stars from Barcelona and Real Madrid expected to be in their team – it is no surprise that they are heavily backed to reach the final.

Team GB are rated third favourites, and face a tougher task against sides like Senegal and Uruguay in their group. Should they qualify, it is still quite hard to see Team GB overcoming the likes of Spain or Brazil in the later stages of the tournament, making them a risky bet for the patriot.
