WHO IS NICK POWELL? WHY DID MANCHESTER UNITED SIGN HIM?

Nicholas Edward “Nick” Powell is an English professional footballer who plays for Manchester United and the England Under-18 team. Born on the 23rd of March 1994, the attacking midfielder was snapped up by Sir Alex Ferguson from Crewe Alexandra on the 12th of June 2012 for a fee close to £6 million.

The signing of Nick Powell came as a shock to many, especially for the Manchester United fans. Not many knew who this 18 year old attacking midfielder was, and why Sir Alex had to sign a virtually unknown player from League One when Premier League rivals such as Manchester City and Chelsea are splashing mega bucks in signing some big name players.

However this is the Sir Alex Ferguson way that we all have come to know about. The Scottish tactician does not unnecessarily spend big bucks on players (with exception to some players!), but he prefers to sign an unknown name and later hope that this player will blossom and become a major player for the Red Devils (remember Cristiano Ronaldo?). However it must be said that the success rate of this is not 100% as there has been a few flops.

But what’s the point of dwelling in the past? Let’s look at the future for a moment. Right now Manchester United have signed an 18 year old attacking midfielder from the lower league and the youngster is on the brink of the biggest challenge of his young career, the Premier League.

So why did Sir Alex sign Nick Powell? What will the youngster bring to the Manchester United team which boasts world class midfielders and wingers such as Luis Nani, Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Shinji Kagawa, Tom Cleverly and many more?

Nick Powell primarily plays as an attacking midfielder and was given a free role to attack while playing for Crewe Alexandra. However this might not be the case at Manchester United as Sir Alex is known to ‘convert’ player’s position to get the best out of them.

Only 18 years of age and standing 6ft 0in in height, Powell definitely has the physique to succeed in the Premier League which is known for its physical style of play.

Powell is also know for his ability to score from midfield. He does not shy away from taking shots at goals and has scored some incredible goal from outside of the box for Crewe including a smashing goal in the 2–0 victory over Cheltenham Town in the 2012 League Two play-off Final at Wembley Stadium.

Powell also has very good dribbling ability and speed which allows him to beat defenders in one-on-one situations. He is also a good passer of the ball and has an eye for goal.

Life As A Manchester United Player

Joining Manchester United will definitely a big step for the youngster and the burden will be on shoulders to prove that he is world class and has the ability to play for a world renowned club such as Manchester United.

It is a known fact the Nick Powell will not be thrown into the Manchester United starting 11 for next season. He will be introduced gradually and how far he goes from there is anybody’s guess.

Whatever the case maybe, Nick Powell has all the necessary qualities and attributes to make him a successful Manchester United player and it will be up to him to show the world that he has what it takes to be one of the best in the world.
