Dear Reader

As a strong supporter of education, you know that every child has the right to education – and these rights start from birth. But every year, over 200 million children under the age of five do not receive these rights, denying them their best chance to achieve their potential and end the cycle of poverty.

This week is the Global Campaign for Education's Global Action Week and we are campaigning for Rights from the Start: early childhood care and education (ECCE). We are asking for your help to make sure these young children get the rights they are entitled to.

• ECCE for all children, without discrimination
• ECCE teachers to be trained and supported as professional teaching staff
• ECCE programmes include children's educational, developmental, nutritional, health and individual needs, including through parenting support.

• Donor governments must honour commitments to support all countries to achieve Education for All, especially

Dear Reader, The Supreme Court has upheld the various provisions of the Right to Education Act and in it's recent landmark judgment made it clear that all schools will have to keep aside 25 per cent of seats for poor children. UNICEF belives the judgment represents a real step forward for the implementation of the Right to Education Act in the country. By providing clarity on an issue that has been in controversy over the last two years since the RTE has been in force, we can focus on the roll-out of RTE and ensure quality education with equity for every child across India.
