Real Madrid overcame the early sending-off of Antonio Adan and a Xabi Prieto hat-trick to beat Real Sociedad 4-3 at the Santiago Bernabeu in La Liga.
Adan, controversially preferred in goal to Iker Casillas, saw red in the seventh minute for a foul on Carlos Vela.
Casillas, who is reportedly feuding with coach Jose Mourinho, came off the bench but could not stop Prieto’s penalty.
That goal made it 1-1 – Karim Benzema having given Madrid a second-minute lead, and Sami Khedira gave the home side a second short-lived advantage before Prieto pegged them back.
But Cristiano Ronaldo made a decisive impact with two goals in three second-half minutes, the second a brilliant free-kick.
Prieto completed his hat-trick but could not inspire Real Sociedad to snatch a point as Daniel Estrada’s late red card made the visitors’ job doubly hard.
