NAPOLI AND HAMMERS IN PURSUIT OF THOMAS VERMAELEN

Wednesday, January 22, 2014

Napoli have made a move for Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen.

The Daily Mail reported that Arsenal have rejected an enquiry from Napoli for out-of-favour defender Vermaelen.

Arsene Wenger would not want the Belgium international to leave while Arsenal are involved in the chase for domestic and European honours, but the player will be aware that his World Cup place is under threat if he is not playing regularly.

West Ham United have reportedly made an ambitious loan bid for Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen.

It is said that the Hammers have enquired about the possibility of loaning the Belgian centre-back for the remainder of the season as their defensive crisis continues.

The 28 year old has hardly featured for the Gunners this campaign, making just three starts in the Premier League, with manager Arsene Wenger preferring Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker in central defence.

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce is in desperate need of some defensive cover following injuries to the likes of Winston Reid, George McCartney, Guy Demel and Joey O’Brien.
