Will England finish top of Group B at Euro 2016?

Tuesday, May 31, 2016

Back in December, most England fans were overjoyed at the prospect of facing Russia,
Wales and Slovakia at Euro 2016. Now, they probably aren’t so confident. What was widely
regarded as a fairly straightforward group is now incredibly competitive – largely due to
Slovakia’s organisation, Russia’s ability to perform on the big stage and... Gareth Bale.

If truth be told, England should still finish above their rivals in Group B but it won’t be an easy
ride. The Three Lions have won their two warm-up matches so far but sterner tests await
sterner tests await them in France this summer. Roy Hodgson has selected a strong squad for the competition and, if they play at their best, England could well shock the world and win the competition – THAT’S how good they could potentially be.

At the time of writing, Bookies.com are various tips as well as Euro 2016 odds and news on
the upcoming competition. England have been tipped by a few pundits over the last few
weeks and The Three Lions will be looking to qualify at the top of Group B to give
themselves the best chance of winning the tournament. After all, second place could leave
England needing to face France in the quarter-finals and that is an imposing prospect to say
the least.

First up for Hodgson’s men is a tricky clash with Russia in Marseille. England will take
hundreds of thousands of supporters down to the south of France for this clash and
Hodgson’s men will fancy their chances of getting off to a good start. Russia are a formidable
outfit and England know that they must win, especially if Wales pick up a positive result
against Slovakia. In fact, Slovakia were expected to be the whipping boys of this division but
their 3-1 victory over Germany suggests they could well be a force.

And with that in mind, Hodgson knows the importance of picking up all three points in their
opening group game. That means The Three Lions will select their strongest available squad
and Bookies.com have suggested that England v Russia will include Rooney, Kane and Vardy in one of their Euro 2016 odds and preview articles. If they are correct, Hodgson’s men
may have too much firepower for the Russians – especially if he deploys both Kane and
Vardy in central areas.

On their day, England are capable of producing great things and success at Euro 2016 would
certainly qualify as a fantastic achievement. Roy Hodgson’s men will be quietly confident of
advancing past the group stages and from there, victory is certainly plausible. Who knows,
the Three Lions could even emulate the legendary World Cup-winning side of 1966 if they
play their cards right...
