It has been reported that Velez Sarsfield president Raul Gamez says a deal with Arsenal over the sale of Maxi Romero is close.

Born: January 9, 1999 (age 16), Moreno, Buenos Aires, Argentina
16-year-old Argentinean Maxi Romero has a keen admirer in Arsene Wenger and could be signing for Arsenal in the near future.
Arsenal made an attempt for the 16 year-old striker in January, only for their €3 million offer to be rejected by Velez Sarsfield. The Gunners weren't expected to return to the negotiating table until June. However, it's emerged that after that initial Arsenal bid, Manchester United made their interest known to Velez's board - and that's kicked Gunners manager Arsene Wenger into action.

The Gunners are in advanced talks with Velez Sarsfield over a £4.5million swoop for the teenage sensation.

Arsenal are confident of completing a deal for the 16-year-old in the coming days.

“Arsenal have made a big offer for Maxi Romero. I don't want to talk figures just yet but it’s a big offer,” confirmed Velez president Raul Gamez.

Romero’s agent Rolando Zarate said: “I met with Arsene Wenger twice in London. They heard about Maxi through their scouts in South America. He is the player who has most impressed him.

“Maxi has huge potential but he is going to complete apprenticeship at a great club like Velez.”

Maxi speaks like the deal has been done.

"I know nothing, it's handled by my dad, my family, Roly and Velez. Of the transfer, I know nothing, Roly and my old man are in the know," he told Velez Radio over the weekend.

"I want to stay in Velez. I decided this from the beginning (of negotiations). I told Roly I did not want to leave Velez. He told me he was going to fix it. Luckily he arranged for me to stay two years in Velez. He talked to my dad and told him that there is a clause for two years."
